VoIP (voice over Internet protocol) is a technology that allows voice communications to travel over an Internet connection instead of a regular (or analog) phone line. This new technology compresses voice (audio) data into packets that are transmitted over data networks and the public Internet. Once at the receiving end, the packets are converted back into voice.
